The year 2023 has been rich in accomplishments and overcome challenges for the CUREMA project. After the training of our facilitators in February, we travelled the border rivers between French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil to set up the project’s facilities in the most accessible locations for our public, and to launch the project’s activities.

Despite unforeseeable difficulties linked to stock-outs of the tests used for the malakits, an unprecedented drought making river transport particularly complex, and the bankruptcy of the airline AirGuyane, the team remained undaunted and overcame all obstacles with perseverance.

To date, this has enabled us to include 557 people in the study and distribute 151 radical treatments and 429 malakits.

We are now ready for a year of great activity in 2024, and look forward to the resolution of the final administrative formalities to enable us to replace the primaquine of the radical treatment with the long-awaited tafenoquine!
